The College of the Florida Keys is taking education to a new level—one that expands options and opportunities for younger students and their families in the lower and middle Keys. In August 2023, the College will open the doors to the CFK Academy, a tuition-free public charter high school that will focus on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). In addition to a complete high school experience, students will have access to perks that come with being part of the College, including the opportunity to earn an associate degree and industry credentials alongside a high school diploma.

Curriculum

The CFK Academy’s curriculum will take a project-based learning approach through all grades and focus on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines. Additionally, the CFK Academy will offer a broad range of connections to local industries and access to scientific and technological fields. Students will be able to participate in programs such as marine science, marine engineering, hospitality, engineering technology, entrepreneurship, culinary, construction, and welding.

Students will be able to participate in extracurricular activities, clubs, and sports through the CFK Academy and Monroe County School District.

Dual Enrollment

Perhaps the largest draw to the CFK Academy will be the easy accessibility to college-level academic and career technical education (CTE) courses through expanded Dual Enrollment opportunities. CFK’s Dual Enrollment program allows high school students to complete courses that earn both high school and college credits, at no cost to the students or their families. CFK Academy students will be able to take Dual Enrollment classes alongside their high school classes without having to commute to another location or go online. Motivated students will be able to graduate with their high school diploma as well as an associate degree, certificate, and/or industry certification.

Opening in the 2023- 2024 School Year

Construction of the 7,000 square-foot building that will house the CFK Academy on the Key West Campus will be complete in December 2022. The CFK Academy will open its doors in the 2023- 2024 school year— starting with grades nine through 11 and adding grade 12 the following year. In early 2023, the College will host several open house events for prospective students and their families. The events will include tours of the new school, details about the curriculum, and guidance through the application process.

Stay tuned for announcements and key dates.
