The College of the Florida Keys’ invites the community to celebrate the birthday of the United States Government at its annual Constitution Day event in the campus library. Constitution Day commemorates the formation and signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787, thus laying the foundation of our government, rights, and freedoms.

Feature guest speaker: The Honorable Edwin A. Scales, III - Chief Judge, Florida’s Third District Court of Appeal

Judge Scales serves as the Chief Judge of Florida’s Third District Court of Appeal, having been appointed to the Court in 2013. Originally from Lakeland, FL, he is the first Judge in the history of the Court to come from Monroe County.

Judge Scales is a graduate of the University of Florida and the University of Florida College of Law. While attending UF, he was elected President of the student body, was selected as the University’s outstanding male graduate and was named to the UF Hall of Fame.

In the years before his appointment to the bench, he served as General Counsel to Historic Tours of America and had a private law practice concentrating in appellate, commercial and real estate litigation, administrative law and mediation.

During this time, he served a four-year term on the Key West City Commission, was chair of the Board of Trustees of The College of the Florida Keys, and vice chair of Florida Commission on Ethics. Judge Scales was elected by Florida Keys’ lawyers to serve five terms as a member of the Florida Bar’s Board of Governors.

Since joining the Court, his volunteer activities have continued as the judicial representative on the Florida Bar Foundation Board of Directors and as a member of Florida’s Judicial Management Council. He has taught at Florida’s College for Advanced Judicial Studies, New Appellate Judges College and the National Judicial College. He currently chairs Florida’s District Court of Appeal Budget Commission.
