Higher Learning Commission becomes accreditor for The College of the Florida Keys
KEY WEST, FL, July 1, 2026— As of July 1, 2026, The College of the Florida Keys (CFK) is fully and solely accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The College has been transitioning to HLC since it was granted initial accreditation in November 2025—maintaining dual accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) during that time. CFK’s membership with SACSCOC, which has accredited the College since 1968, concluded on June 30, 2026.
“Reaching this milestone is a testament to the determination and dedication of our faculty, staff, and administration. As we conclude our 60th anniversary, completing this transition to the nation’s largest institutional accreditor is a fitting reflection of how far we’ve come— and the strong foundation we have established for an even stronger future,” said Dr. Jonathan Gueverra, CFK President and CEO. “Our students can be confident that their financial aid, their credits, and their degrees are backed by a world-class accreditor, and this positions CFK to continue opening doors for our students and community.”
"We are also deeply grateful to SACSCOC, whose guidance and standards have been foundational to this institution for nearly six decades. From our initial accreditation in 1968 through every chapter of our growth, SACSCOC has been a steadfast partner in our commitment to academic quality and student success. That relationship shaped who we are today, and we carry that forward," Gueverra added.
Founded in 1895, HLC is a private nonprofit accrediting agency and the nation’s largest institutional accreditor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. HLC accredits approximately 1,000 colleges and universities across the United States. Recent Florida legislation allows public colleges and universities to pursue accreditation with an accreditor other than the previously required agency, SACSCOC. CFK is among the first institutions in Florida to complete the full transition to a new accreditor.
CFK, established in 1965, serves students throughout the Florida Keys with associate degrees, baccalaureate programs, technical certificates, and workforce training. Accreditation by HLC evaluates institutional mission, integrity, ethical conduct, teaching and learning quality, resources and support, evaluation and improvement, and institutional effectiveness in planning and resource management.
Accreditation is an ongoing relationship. As a member of HLC, CFK will continue to participate in regular reviews for compliance with HLC standards and remains committed to continuous improvement in serving students and the Florida Keys community.
